How to View CT Scans on iPhone & iPad in 2026

Updated April 2026 · 6 min read

CT (Computed Tomography) scans generate hundreds or thousands of DICOM slices that traditionally require a desktop PACS workstation to review. But with modern iOS apps like MedScan, you can now open, navigate, and analyze full CT studies directly on your iPhone or iPad — completely offline, with no cloud uploads.

What You Need

  • iPhone or iPad running iOS 17 or later
  • CT scan files in DICOM format (.dcm) — from your hospital, imaging center, or DICOM CD
  • MedScan app — free on the App Store

Step 1: Get Your DICOM Files

Most imaging centers provide scans on a DICOM CD or via a patient portal. Common formats include individual .dcm files, ZIP archives, or folder structures. MedScan handles all of these — including corrupted ZIP files from Google Drive exports.

You can transfer files to your iPhone via AirDrop, email attachments, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or any cloud storage app.

Step 2: Open in MedScan

Tap the import button in MedScan and select your files. The app uses a two-phase parsing system: it first discovers all DICOM files in the folder structure, then parses them in parallel. A 500-slice CT study loads in under 3 seconds.

MedScan automatically detects the modality (CT, CBCT, MRI, etc.) and configures the appropriate viewing tools and window/level presets.

Step 3: Navigate Slices

Swipe up/down to scroll through axial slices. Pinch to zoom, drag to pan. Double-tap for fullscreen. The gesture system supports simultaneous multi-gesture input — you can adjust window/level while scrolling.

Step 4: MPR Reconstruction (Pro)

Switch to multi-panel mode to view axial, sagittal, and coronal planes simultaneously. MedScan supports 1×1, 2×1, 1×2, and 2×2 layouts with synchronized scrolling and cross-reference lines between panels.

Step 5: Measure & Annotate (Pro)

Use the ruler tool for linear measurements and the angle tool for angular measurements. Both tools feature a 3× loupe magnifier for sub-millimeter precision. ROI (Region of Interest) statistics show mean, min, max, and standard deviation of Hounsfield Unit values.

Step 6: AI Analysis — Coming Soon

AI scan analysis is in active development and coming soon to Pro subscribers. Planned: one-tap analysis on any slice, structured findings, and follow-up Q&A. Only the rendered image will be sent — never the full study or DICOM metadata.
